    Genre: Drama

    Director: Jason Reitman

    Cast: George Clooney, Vera

    Farmiga, Anna Kendrick

Storyline: A corporate downsizing expert sort of finds out the meaning of life

Bottomline: Brilliantly written and acted, this is a movie of our times

‘Up in the Air’ is about a man’s journey through many, many flight miles to reach the golden 10 million mile frequent flyer mark.

Watching the movie brings to mind Simon and Garfunkel’s cheerfully cheesy line, ‘Suitcase and guitar in hand’. The song is ‘Homeward Bound’ but Ryan Bingham, a corporate downsizing expert, believes home is on an airplane. As he comments in the voiceover at the beginning of the film, “All the things you probably hate about travelling — the recycled air, the artificial lighting, the digital juice dispensers, the cheap sushi — are warm reminders that I’m home.” Bingham is happiest in the air, living out of a suitcase, in splendid isolation, emptying his imaginary backpack of all attachments.

    The drama begins…

All that changes when Natalie Keener, a bright young thing straight out of college figures out a way to fire people online thus dramatically cutting overheads. Bingham wants to show Natalie his job cannot be outsourced to a machine and invites Natalie to fly with him to learn what the job is all about.

Bingham finds a kindred soul in Alex, a road warrior. Between Alex and Natalie, Bingham begins to wonder whether he needs a change in perspective.

Based on a novel by Walter Kirn, ‘Up in the Air’ is Jason Reitman’s third feature film following his brilliant debut ‘Thank You for Smoking’ and the rocking ‘Juno’. This film is up for six Oscars. George Clooney is a gold class movie star but that does not mean he is not a great actor. It is easy to forget what a class act he is as he moves about stalking the corporate corridors lithely in his crisp white shirts. At a moment of realisation, Clooney as Bingham crinkles his eyes and gives a rueful shrug. The understatement says much more than a million words and actions. Vera Farmiga is warm, wonderful and super sexy as Alex, while Anna Kendrick has nailed the enthu cutlet Natalie. ‘Up in the Air’ is an astute comment on our lives. There is the recession and we are connected 24 by 7 and yet are little islands isolated in a sea of bytes. ‘Up in the Air’ will make you laugh, cry, think and debate for the longest time. And that is one of the prime reasons one goes to the movies.
